Yoga brings balance by nurturing the body and the mind, we turn our consciousness towards inner calm and we find the inner stillness that brings peace. We become more sensitive to the feeling of who or what we truly are. Our body needs movement to be alive. In yoga practice we combine mindfulness of breathing with mindfulness of movement then stay in stillness. We open our bodies to be more flexible, to release blockages and tension. Yoga frees our circulating energy. Proper breathing demands a three-part movement. Firstly the diaphragm causes the abdomen to expand filling the lower lungs. Secondly, the intercostal muscles expand the rib cage and fill the middle lung, and finally the collarbones lift bringing air into the upper part of the lungs. Most people breath using only the upper part of their lungs, literally starving the body of it’s essential oxygen, while preventing the complete elimination of noxious waste products. For me as a yoga practitioner, yoga is as important as flossing my teeth. I can live without it but overall it enhances my health. It is never too late to start practicing yoga. It will improve the wellbeing and health of anyone who practices; regardless of age.
